Notes for Installation of Road Stud

Road studs are flashing devices used in road construction to delineate road edges and center-lines. Embedded in the road surface, they are an improvement on the traditional cat’s eyes in that they may give drivers more than a thirty-second reaction window. However, problems such as damage and the curtailed service life of road studs often occur in the practical application, which is usually caused by the inappropriate installations. The author has summed up some common problems encountered during the installation of road studs and offered the proper installing method out of years of construction experience. Hope all of the readers can benefit from this article.

The following is the common problems occurred during the installation:

  1. Installing the road studs at a position with rough surface.

This move will directly leads to the imbalance of stress born by the different parts of the road stud, so that it will be easily broken down if run over by a large-tonnage vehicle.

  1. Lousiness of the installation site of road studs.

The fastness level of the road stud depends on the tight cohesion between the road stud, glue and the road surface. The dust on the dirty installation site will absorb most of the adhesive strength of the glue, thus making the road stud rickety to the road surface and fall off easily.

  1. Applying too much or too little installing glue.

Applying too much glue will directly reduce the fastness and curtail the service span of the road stud while applying too little of it will lead to the exuding of the glue, which may spread on the reflector and harm the reflecting brightness.

  1. Unevenly smearing the installing glue.

in addition to applying right amount of glue, the operation of smearing glue is also supposed to be even to ensure the balance of stress born by different parts of the road stud and avoid the damage caused by the imbalanced stress.

  1. Insufficient time for the glue to be solidified. It usually takes 6-8 hours for a newly installed road stud to be fully solidified and fastened to the road surface. In many cases, however, people tend to remove the installing isolation facilities in less 2 hours, which will lead to the distortion and falling off of the road stud when run over or stoke by vehicles.

And the following practices can effectively avoid the above problems :

  1. Place the installation of isolation facilities, determine the installation location, ensure that the installation road is flat.
  2. Clean installation location with brush while ensuring that the installation position is dry;
  3. Apply the right amount of glue evenly on the road stud;
  4. Firmly press the road stud on the installation position, ensure that the direction is correct and get rid of the excessive glue;
  5. Make an inspection in 2 hours after the installation to ensure that all the road studs are not falsely installed, crooked or distorted by pressing.
  6. Remove the installation isolation facilities in more than 6-8 hours after finishing the installation of the road stud.
